Machupicchu Information 2021

Geographical location:

The Inca city of Machu Picchu is located at 13º 9′ 47″ south latitude and 72º 32′ 44″ west longitude. It is part of the district of the same name, in the province of Urubamba, in the Cusco region of Peru.

Distance: 110.5 km from Cusco

Weather:

Rainy during all summer months (from November to March) Sunny between May and September, although even then showers are not uncommon. Maximum temperatures reach 27º C, while minimum temperatures rarely fall below 11º C.

Access:

It is located 4 hours from the city of Cusco (Cusco – Ollantaytambo: 1 and 1/2 hours by bus, Ollantaytambo – Machupicchu: 1 and 1/2 hours by train) . Or two hours by train from the town of Ollantaytambo; you can also get there by the famous Inca Trail (4 days walking) and also by other alternative routes such as the Salkantay (5 days walking) and the Inka Jungle (4 days walking) which arrive first at the town of Aguas Calientes.

The citadel of Machu Picchu is the most important of Cusco’s tourist attractions. Discovered by local people like Agustín Lizáraga and other inhabitants who lived and worked in the terraces and later scientifically discovered for the world in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, this citadel is considered one of the most extraordinary examples of organic architecture in the world.

The closest town to this world wonder is the town of Aguas Calientes or Machupicchu pueblo (2050 m.a.s.l. ) which is located in the lower part on the banks of the Aguas Calientes and Urubamba rivers, all trains arrive here and almost 100% of visitors, this town has many tourist facilities such as accommodation of different categories, restaurants, internet, cafes, etc; This town has the name of Aguas Calientes because there are thermal baths, which are frequently visited by tourists; keep in mind that this town is small, all the roads are pedestrian so there are no taxis, the only vehicles that can be seen are the buses that go up and down from Machupicchu; from here you take a bus to the archaeological centre of Machupicchu (25 minutes).

Entrance tickets for any of the routes are not sold at the entrance. Remember to buy them in advance of your visit. You can also buy your e-ticket online with your Visa or Multired card. You can also buy it at authorized points of sale with your Visa or Mastercard or at any Banco de la Nación counter. The entrance of the visitors to the Monument will be from 06:00 to 16:00 hrs. and the departure time until 17:00 hrs. with a capacity of 2500 visitors per day. From July 15, 2011, new entrance tickets will be valid for the Machupicchu – Waynapicchu – Temple of the Moon and Machupicchu – Machupicchu Mountain routes. It is not possible to enter these areas without the corresponding ticket. The maximum capacity is 400 visitors per day, divided into two groups of 200 people. The entrance hours are from 7:00 to 8:00 and from 10:00 to 11:00 on each of the routes.
